Nowadays, there is a traditional craft in Burgundian Bresse: chairmaker.
This activity, located especially in Bantanges and Rancy, two villages between Louhans and Cuisery, dates from the early 19th century. It seems that farmer families began to make chairs to complement their farm activity. The development of this handicraft has been favoured by local natural conditions : plenty of woods, grass (called "laiches") of damp plains along the Seille river and ponds, growing of rye providing the straw.

At the end of the 19th century, some farmers became small craftsmen with one or two employees. Nowadays a dozen firms of chair-making are listed on Rancy and Bantanges. A few women still straw-bottom chairs at home for themselves.

These handicraftsmen are ready to welcome you in their workshop. So you will appreciate the high quality of their creations and their know-how.
