CHURCHES

There are a large number of churches in Bresse Bourguignonne, differing from each other in their construction period, their Burgundian or Franc-Comtois influence, their belfry with a square, octogonal or even spiral shape (made of varnished tiles, stone, brick). The crooked belfry in Mervans © Office de Tourisme du Pays de la Bresse Bourguignonne

Most of them were built in the Romanesque style, with stone probably taken from the Côte Chalonnaise region or from the pink stone quarries in Préty. Bantanges and Sagy are two rare examples of Romanesque churches built with bricks.

A number of Gothic churches (Joudes, Sainte Croix en Bresse, Louhans) and Renaissance churches (Bellevesvre) can also be seen, many of which were re-built in the 18th century.
